free things that companies give away to advertise their businesses, promotional items

Wouldn’t it be great if companies gave away their products for free? Most companies cannot do this, but they might give you something little for free. They might give you a magnet for your refrigerator or a notebook with their name on it. If you go to a convention or a festival, they might even give you something better. If you’re lucky, you might get a free pair of socks with the company logo, a nice hat, or a coffee cup. These cheap, free items are called swag.
Companies don’t spend a lot of money on swag. Most swag is small and cheap. It helps companies to quickly get their names and logos in a lot of places. Because Olympic athletes are in the media, companies like to give them swag. Ibtihaj Muhammad is on the US Olympic fencing team, and she recently received a lot of free athletic clothing from Nike. She is very popular in the media, and Nike hopes people will see their logo when she wears their swag.
