Steph:  Ya know, Canada and America are a lot alike. I went there though. One of the big differences is that they use kilometers.

Sara:  Really? I don’t really know anything about kilometers. Like how many kilometers are in a mile?

Steph:  You know, I know that there are more kilometers in a mile than there are miles in a kilometer.

Sara:  Really?

Steph:  Um, I think it’s 1.6.

Sara:  One point six kilometers equals one mile?

Steph:  I think so. Yeah. It’s very confusing though. Especially when your car is in miles per hour.

Sara:  Mmmhmm.

Steph:  And you’re looking at signs that say kilometers to a certain destination. The math is just terrible.

Sara:  Well then, is the speed different, too? Like if your car says miles per hour and you’re going 30? Are you still going 30 kilometers?

Steph:  Right. Exactly. I mean, if you drive your car in from America, then you have to do all this math. But, um, when I went to Germany, I got in my rental car and I was doing all this conversion. And I was like, oh, ya know.

Sara:  Yeah.

Steph:  Fifty kilometers, ya know, to Frankfurt. And then I was dividing by miles and all this stuff.

Sara:  Wow.

Steph:  It was stupid though because the car was in kilometers.

Sara:  Oh. Whoops.

Discussion

Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation? The conversion between miles and kilometers can be pretty confusing! Another confusing conversion is between Celsius and Fahrenheit. Next week is all about temperature, so you might want to look it up.
Have a great weekend!

I'm from Bulgaria and here we use kilometers too. It is a little strange that the difference between both is not a whole number – it is 1.6 – that is scary. :P  Thanks for information.
