This year, the Brangelina divorce is making the headlines everywhere. Brangelina is a nickname for a famous couple, two Hollywood actors named Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Pitt and Jolie began dating in 2004, while Pitt was still married to another woman. Although Pitt divorced his wife in 2005 to be with Jolie, the gory details of his divorce were in all the magazines. The public scrutinized every detail of the affair.
Angelina Jolie was married twice before marrying Brad Pitt in 2014. Since her father is also a famous actor, she has spent most of her life living in the public eye. More recently, she started to use her fame for worthwhile causes, like helping refugees and orphans. Pitt and Jolie have six children together. Many people are concerned that the children will feel torn up by their parents’ divorce. Other people think that it’s none of our business.
Andy says that love in the limelight is difficult. Does Marni feel the same way? Listen to today’s English lesson to find out!

Marni: I want to just say up front, I don’t think this is any of our business, but Andy, I have to admit, I’m still kind of torn up about the Brangelina divorce.
Andy_H: Oh, here we go again!
Marni: I was really surprised! I mean, I know they’re in the public eye all the time and they’re always being scrutinized, but…
Andy_H: I just can’t bring myself to think that making the headlines for a divorce is something that’s actually worthwhile. I’m sorry, but these people are constantly in the limelight. Give them some privacy!
Marni: Well, you’re right. But still, there was something about their relationship, and their kids, and all the good work that they were trying to do. I really had hope that they would just make it work somehow.
Andy_H: Well, isn’t that always the story? I mean, we’re talking about a guy that, the last time he divorced, he had the exact same amount of attention. Everybody wanted to know the gory details, but let’s be honest, it’s not our business. When you get divorced… pray it never happens… do you want everybody knowing every little, nitty-gritty detail?
Marni: Well, I know there are lots of rumors flying around, and I certainly hope that that would never happen in anyone’s situation. I just… I’m a little saddened by it, and I’ll just leave it at that.
Andy_H: Want a hug?
Marni: Possibly.
Andy_H: Come here.

Discussion
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are very famous actors. They live in the limelight. Now, their divorce is making the headlines. When Marni found out that they are getting divorced, she was torn up. Although she agrees that it’s not our business to talk about other people’s problems, she was shocked by the news. What will happen with all of their children? What about the projects and charity work they did together?
Andy has also heard the rumors, but he doesn’t want to know the gory details. He thinks that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie shouldn’t be scrutinized right now. They need time to work through what’s happening. They should not be in the public eye while they’re getting divorced. Instead, Andy wants to see something more worthwhile in the news and on TV. But since he knows how sad Marni is because of the Brangelina divorce, he offers her a big hug.
Do you want to live in the public eye someday? Or does being scrutinized make you feel uncomfortable?
