Lesson No. 11 “Reading between the lines” #5:

Janet took her mom’s advice and visited a therapist for consultation.

Words from the therapist:

“A little birdie told me what was going down at your company and how it was affecting you. Also, you gave your nice boyfriend his walking papers as a result. Talk to me!”

Question:

Can you paraphrase the therapists’ statement?

Explanation of Lesson No. 10.4:

The meaning of these words is necessary to paraphrase the lesson:

Last nerve= Being annoyed to the extent that you can’t take it anymore.

Jettisoned= To dump or abandon.

Time-out= To temporarily stop doing something.

Shrink= A psychiatrist or therapist.

Bet my bottom dollar= A sure thing.

These phrases are commonly used by English speakers.

Amira, thanks for your kind words.

Bingo, Amira! Your paraphrase is accurate and I like how you chose the therapist as your choice of words. The flow of the wording is smooth and a result of your diligent and consistent efforts of learning English over time.

You are an encouragement to others, including myself. Thanks!

Hi, Mr. Alston,

Janet’s mother is saying:

“Your company’s decisions have been getting on your nerves, and you dumped your boyfriend who was a nice guy. I think you should take a break from work and see a therapist. I’m sure they can help you more than I can”

Bora – Thanks for your good effort, but the goal is to paraphrase (rewrite) Janet’s mothers’ statement instead of an explanation of it.

Fatemeh- You’re on the right track, but include the phrase “time-out” in your paraphrase. The conjunction “and” is used before seeing the psychiatrist which means there is another thing that has to be done before seeing the shrink.

You both are tenacious in your efforts, good job!

Hello Mr. Alston. Thank you very much for your new lesson 🙏
My answer:
Your company’s decisions makes you lose your temper, and so you left your good boyfriend. You should talk to a psychiatrist، and I am absolutely sure that he can help you better than me.

Her mom says to her:

“Your company’s decisions have been getting on your last nerve, and you jettisoned your boyfriend who was a nice guy. I think you should call a time-out and see a shrink. I’d bet my bottom dollar they can help you better than I can.”

Bora, Amira, Fatemeh, and Everyone, Happy New Year!

Explanation of Lesson No. 9.3

A “Dear John Letter” is a letter of breaking off an intimate relationship. Janet didn’t want to communicate it that way, but she did express herself indirectly by telling her boyfriend they needed some time apart from each other.

To make sure he got the message, she said, “I’m out” which meant she officially ended the relationship.

Thanks to all who contributed to Englishbaby this year, and those who didn’t, you are encouraged to do so in 2019.
