Migs talks about seeing Madonna’s husband, Guy Ritchie on a popular late-night talk show the other night. Besides being married to Madonna Ritchie is a successful British director who became well known after making “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.” He has a new movie coming out called “Snatch” that features Brad Pitt along side many of the same actors in his last movie. However, not everyone at Ebaby! is so thrilled that he’s in the movie.

Migs:  I saw Guy Ritchie last night on Jay Leno.

Tanis:  Oh really?

Zach:  Who’s Guy Ritchie?

Migs:  Guy Ritchie is, uh, Madonna’s husband, but he’s also a film maker.

Tanis:  He’s British…English and, uh, he did the “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.”

Zach:  Uh, was he in it? Was he one of the actors?

Tanis:  No, he was the director and I think he wrote it too. And his new one I think it’s like, “Smash” or “Crash”...

Migs:  Snatch.”

Tanis:  Snatch.”

Migs:  But, check this out. When he was on Leno last night he said that before he made “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” he was unemployed. So he went from unemployed, to “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” to married to Madonna all within, like, three years.

Tanis:  Nice career move.

Migs:  Yeah. Do you want to see that movie Tanis?

Tanis:  Yeah I do want to see it. Except, right now I think it’s stupid that Brad Pitt’s in that movie.

Migs:  Wait. Why do you think it’s stupid?

Tanis:  I just think that’s irritating. Like, I thought that “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” was such a cool movie. Like, they didn’t have any huge names. Now everyone wants to get on the Guy Ritchie Bandwagon cause he’s so cool, and so it’s like Brad Pitt can use his big name to go there and, like, grow out his facial hair and have an accent and bad teeth and be cool. I think that’s…that just irritates me.

Discussion

It’s typical in Hollywood when an up-and-coming director to makes a good independent film to start attracting bigger and bigger names to his or her films. As the first films gain popularity the big stars want to work with them. In Guy Ritchie’s case, he has risen very fast going from unemployed to married to Madonna in a short period of time. “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” was an interesting film about a group of four friends who lose a high-stakes card game and have a short amount of time to repay a large debt to a local crime boss. The film is interesting because of the cool characters and the interesting way it was shot. It features Sting in a cameo appearance as one of the boy’s father. It also has a lot of interesting British slang. Tanis feels that part of the reason Guy Ritchie’s first movie was cool was because it didn’t have any big names in it. She thinks that the new movie won’t be as good because Brad Pitt is in it. Note: One of the main items in the film is a pair of antique, very expensive guns. The phrase “lock, stock and barrel” means “everything.” (I.e. I’m going to sell all my possessions, lock, stock and barrel) A barrel is a round wood cask for holding liquid like beer or wine. But it is also the part of the rifle that the bullet comes out of. So, the title of the movie is a play on that phrase. Have you seen either of these movies? Want to comment on Madonna’s recent marriage? Come to the “Movie Madness” message board and ask them! From the front row, Zach
