Hello Movie Fans,
This week John tells me about the film, Gangs of New York. He recently went and enjoyed the show. I can’t decide if I should see this movie. I like movies based on history, but this one seems a bit excessively violent.
Let’s see if I can learn enough about the movie to decide if I want to go.
Dialog

Anna: John, I heard you saw Gangs of New York, did you like it?
John: Yeah, I actually really did.
Anna: Who was in that?
John: Leonardo DiCaprio is the, the main star, but also Daniel Day-Lewis. You know him?
Anna: Um, yeah actually I can’t think of what he’s been in, but I, he’s familiar.
John: Well he was awesome in this. He’s going to get my vote for best supporting actor this year.
Anna: Wow, what’s a, what’s the general story?
John: It’s all about immigrants coming to New York about 100 years ago and them fighting for power.
Anna: Was it predictable? Was it a good ending? Did you agree with it?
John: Yeah, I though it was a great ending, a lot of times you sit through long movies like that and you’re kinda disappointed with how it turns out, but this was just perfect!
Anna: Is it the type of movie they could make a sequel?
John: No it’s not. So you better go see this one ‘cause you’re not going to have another stab at it.

According to John, you need to see this movie. I should warn you though, it was rated R for violence. It reflects a period in American history when newly arrived immigrants were fighting for land and power. In the first act you will meet Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio), a young Irish kid whose father Priest Vallon was killed by the notorious Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis), the bigot in town. He vows revenge but waits for an eternity until he can match Bill as an equally powerful rival.
If historical adventure is something you crave, go and have a good time. If you prefer to laugh or be romantically moved, you may want to pass on this movie. I still can’t decide for myself.
Have a great week,
Anna
