So, by now, you all know that a freak is someone who is different. And we’ve decided that it’s not bad to be a freak. We’ve talked about the man who wrote Superfreak, Rick James. We’ve talked about our music freak, the guy who is totally into making and giving away mixed CDs. Today, we move on to other kinds of freaks – monsters. Do you believe in monsters? See what Steph and Sara have to say about them.

Dialog

Steph

Sara

Steph: Do you believe in monsters?

Sara: I believed in monsters when I was little. I thought that there were monsters in my closet.

Steph: Oooh. That’s totally scary.

Sara: Yeah. I always had to make sure that my mom closed the door all the way before I went to bed.

Steph: Wow.

Sara: Yeah. Do you believe in monsters?

Steph: Well, I didn’t. But then I saw this movie Monsters, Inc.. And it kinda made me believe in monsters again.

Sara: Really? Why?

Steph: Because, it was like, um, these monsters lived in closets and under beds. But it was like they lived in a monster factory.

Sara: Oh wow.

Steph: And actually, they weren’t bad monsters. They were good monsters. So, I believe in them now. But I believe they’re good.

Sara: Huh. I wonder why we always assume that monsters are bad.

Steph: I don’t know. It’s really weird. I mean, we just think, maybe because they’re different from the way we are that they’re bad.

Sara: Because they’re usually big and hairy and creepy and all that stuff.

Steph: Right. That’s true. But even big, hairy, creepy things, if they’re smiling and happy, then they’re not scary.

Sara: That’s true.

Steph: Yeah.

Discussion

Have you seen this movie? I actually watched it with my English class in Germany. It was a group of about 30 students and at the end of the 2-month course, we celebrated by ordering pizza and watching a movie. They chose the movie. This movie is really great because it’s a cartoon. The themes are both for children and adults though. It’s about how being different is not bad and how people don’t have to be scared by differences. It’s something that everyone can understand. You should check it out!
