Over the past few years I was teaching English in Japan and Thailand. It was a great experience, but the teaching jobs I had were not very fulfilling. Even though I had a teaching certificate and an undergrad degree in English, I could only find teaching jobs in private language schools. I think I’d rather teach in universities, and in order to do so I have to get a higher degree. So, last week was back to the books for me.
Listen in as John and I talk about what it’s like going back to school.

John:  Dave, you’re heading back to school, right?

Dave:  Yeah, first day of classes were yesterday.

John:  Wow, it’s time to buckle down, huh?

Dave:  Yeah, it is. It’s difficult, though, to get back in the swing of it. I’m only 29, but I feel a little over-the-hill. A real difficulty is, you know, these faculty at the schools, they live in the ivory tower and it’s hard to relate that to the real world.

John:  I can imagine. Now, how is tuition these days? Are you paying in-state or out-of-state?

Dave:  Welll, as a part-time student I only pay in-state tuition. But going back to school is expensive, you know, tuition and all these other expenses: books and school clothes.

John:  Right. But I guess it’s all worth it in the end, right?

Dave:  It is. Or, well, I hope it will be.

John:  Well, let me know if you need any help with your homework.

Dave:  Okay. And my bills?

John:  Ah, I don’t know about that.

Dave:  Alright.

Discussion

Most people enter university straight from high school. They are young and inexperienced and more concerned with fitting in socially than they are with exercising and expanding their minds and professional skills. When I entered university I had no real idea of what I wanted to do with my life. Who does at 18 years old? I spent four years partying and studying here and there between hangovers. A ton of money on education down the drain. Hopefully a master’s degree will help get me on the right track.
