Brazil, Chile oppose increased US military presence in Colombia

India

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his Chilean counterpart Michelle Bachelet Thursday said they oppose U.S.-Colombian plans to allow the U.S. access to Colombian airbases for international counternarcotics operations.

"I do not like the idea of an American military base in Colombia," Lula da Silva said Thursday when holding a press conference with Bachelet.

Lula said he will discuss the increased cooperation with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Bachelet told the press in Brazi; she "fully agreed" with Lula and that Colombia's decision to allow the U.S. to use its airbases "affects all countries and worries them."

Colombia and the U.S. are near closing a deal that allows the U.S. to use Colombian facilities for the north Americans' 'counternarcotics' operations in the Caribbean and Pacific. The plans caused great friction with neighbors Ecuador and Venezuela.

Uribe is meeting with da Silva to discuss this updated agreement with the Americans. Brazil is a good neighbor and they have resonable concerns. Uribe and I think most Colombians could give a shit what the thugs in Caracas and Quito think. When they stop supporting (and accepting money from) terrorists, maybe their opinions will be sought.

There are Colombians with concerns as well, but the deal would only allow the US access to 7 airbases NOT the establishment of US military bases. There are currently about 300 American troops in Colombia and it might be increased to 800, which is the max allowed under the current agreement.

huh! Do they find "terrorists" there too?

In Latin Ameirica, resentment against US imperialism is sharp and has gave birth to what is now known as Pink revolution i.e change in regimes with Centre-left Govts. Lulla too came into power using Anti-(US)Hagemonic language. Though like most Arab regimes this is just show off.

If Lulla gave this statement, it is merely a public stand, in real he has no problem with the development of US military presence increasing in Comobia.

In real, this move is part of dirty tactics that US has always followed  in Latin America. Now US wants to over throw Chavez. US is making this move to encircle Venzuala.

Colombia has had an internal conflict for 40+ years, and many of the actions of the guerilla armies, the paramilitaries who formed to oppose them, and the drug cartels are acts of terror. Some argue that the government acts the same. Las FARC have used the jungles of neighboring Venezuela and Ecuador as safe havens, have been supplied with weapons by Chavez, and have contributed money to both Chavez and Correa.

I think Chavez is his own worst enemy. His policies have bankrupted his nation and he continues to shut down the opposition. His bluster about sending troops to honduras is a huge bluff, as without the military, he'd face the same fate as Zelaya.

don't know what's "dirty" about this move. The US has a legitimate concern about narcotrafficking (I don;t think this is the best way to deal with it, but it's still a legit concern) as does Colombia. Venezuela is led by a constantly threatening leftist who seems a bit unstable and needs an outside enemy to take his people's minds off their economic problems. Colombia is the oldest democracy in S America and has a long and solid relationship with the US.

It was issued in the blood of untold numbers of Colombians and others who fought the Spaniards to create their democracy and then internal enemies to keep it.
