Sorry, birgul, but just because someone teaches one subject it does not mean they cannot be knowledgeable about other subjects.

a light-year is a measurement of distance. Your author used it as a measurement of time. Simple mistake, since the term has the word "year" as part of it,  but one commonly made by people who really don't know any better or who really are ignorant about that branch of science. 

I compared it to a similar mistake made by George Lucas in Star Wars, referring to a "parsec" as a unit of time as well.
