Number of Parts of Speech

Hi, Amy. In some grammar books it says that there are 8 parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, prepositon, conjunction and the interjection. But other books state that there are 9 parts of speech and they also add the Numeral to the mentioned above. Why is there such a difference? Is the Numeral really a part of speech or not? And why?

Hi! I would not call a numeral a part of speech. Numerals are usually adjectives (“We have five kittens”), but they can also be nouns (“My favorite number is nine“). I haven’t heard of a numeral being called its own form of speech!
