British/American usage

British usage: One should get to know one’s neighbours.

American usage: One should get to know his neighbours.

Do you think it’s fair to use “his” instead of “her” in American usage? because anyway you can’t use “their” in that place, can you ?

On the other hand the British usage is quite gender neutral coz it doesn’t use grammatical gender at all.

If you use “one” as the subject of the sentence, you should use “one” for the possesive as well. However, if you could say ” A person should get to know his or her neighbors.”

Best,

Amy
