How can I improve my listening?

Hi. I just come to America for 5 months, but I still can’t understand when American students are talking. In this case, what do you think I could do to improve my listening? Thank you.

Practice is one of the only good ways to improve listening. Definitely listen to the English, baby! dialogs every day. These dialogs reflect natural American speech in terms of vocabulary and speed. Use the quiz questions to test your understanding. 


If possible, see if your campus has a conversation exchange program. It might be easier for you to understand Americans in a one-on-one situation, rather than trying to understand whole groups of students talking to one another.


Watching American movies with subtitles is another good way to improve your listening skills. Watch the video one time with subtitles and then watch it again without subtitles. Ask yourself questions, such as, “What are these people saying?”, “What new vocabulary do they use?”, and “How can I say that in another way?”
