“That was when I lost my cool.”

“They were walking home when they were discussing the problem”

Should there be a pause before the conjunction ‘when’ do you think?

“When” is used differently in the above setences. There should not be a pause in front of “when” in either sentence.

1 )”Home is where the heart is” .....will the pause be after where?

2) “I like opera, where he prefers ballet” .......will the pause be after or before where?

3) I’m the one who bought it”.............will the pause be after or before who?

And also I’d like to know the positions of pauses for conjunctions like, that, whichever, whoever, whatever, whenever, whomsoever, when, what, which,  when etc.

He doesn’t know what he’s talking about…...... Does the pause come before or after ‘what’?

Best regards,

Abhishek

1) I was wondering if you could help me.

2) I was wondering what exactly you are looking for.

I’d like to know if the pauses should be after ‘if’ and ‘what’ or before them?

Best regards,

Abhishek

The problem is that sometimes there are bad side effects…............

Similar to stress, pauses depend on the individual speaker. People pause when speaking because they are thinking of what to say next or because they are running out of breath or because they want to emphasize something.

Generally speaking, however, you do not need a pause everytime there is a conjunction. In fact, in your above example questions, the only sentence where I would actually place a pause is the following:

“I like opera, where (or “whereas”) he prefers ballet.” In this sentence, I would pause before “where” to separate the two thoughts. Most of the time, though, conjuctions connect two ideas and do not require a pause before or after.

“Bob Fosse was in his early thirties, a small, intense man who had been a dancer and actor in several Hollywood movies.”

I need to know whether you would use a pause after or before ‘who’?
