Amanda: Hey, Jeff. How are those reports coming along?


I know Amanda is asking if Jeff’s finished his reports. But I’m not used to the phrase comming along. Can I just say “How are those reports” or “Have you finished your reports”? What’s the difference between these expressions and the one with “coming along”? What’s “coming along” mean?

Coming along is used to emphasize the fact that something is still in process. Amanda’s question means the same as, “How are those reports going?” It means she knows Jeff isn’t finished yet, but she wants to know how much progress he has made.
