2) The Nile is longer than any other river in the world.



My question to you is, when can I use “any other” in place of other?

1) Using “any” suggests that the thing compared is not a member of the group compared (The Nile is not a river).


2) Using “any other” suggests that the thing is a member of the group being compared (The Nile is, in fact, a river).


In conversational English, people will use both, but using “any other” is grammatically correct.
