Dark Side of the Moon by the British band Pink Floyd is one of the most popular albums of all time. Released in 1973, it remained a top seller in the U.S. for 14 years. Over the years, new listeners kept finding the album and it continued to stay near the top of charts. It’s been 30 years since the album originally came out, but it remains an important part of music history.

Dark Side of the Moon is one of those albums that people often put on their list of albums they’d want if they were stuck on a deserted island for the rest of their lives. It’s so good that some people have been listening to it regularly for 30 years.
So, what makes Dark Side of the Moon so good? There are many things, but two of the most important are the lyrics written by Roger Waters and the slow psychedelic sound of the music created by the band. One of the best songs on the album is called “Wish You Were Here.” Waters wrote it about his friend and former bandmate Syd Barret. Syd became mentally ill and had to leave the group, so “Wish” is a song about loss, longing and sadness. Check out some of the lyrics:
