I want to make new friends

Thailand

Hello everyone my name is Joy. I am a Thai national but I am now living in England with my English husband. We have no children but I love shopping, cooking, spending time with my friends, etc. I want to make friends who want to practise English the same as I do. I have an English husband but in my opinion it is better not just learn how to speak English but also to learn about other cultures, languages and make new friends. I hope to hear from you soon.

Bye for now.

Dear Jianyanlan,

Thank you for your message. I believe that you and most people know how to improve their English. The problem is people give up before they get any improvement. I understand English is another one of the more difficult languages to learn, like Chinese for example.

In my opinion the best way to learn English is, to get yourself ready and concentrate when you start to learn, otherwise you might miss some very important things. I find English writing is easier than speaking. When you speak you have to make sure that you do not miss any words or put the words in the wrong order, otherwise the sentence will not make sense. Another problem arises when you speak with an accent. Most people who speak English as a second language find it difficult to remove their native accent even some British people have a problem! For example Scotish people speaking English with Scotish accent, while people from Wales will speak with a Welsh accent. English people also joke about Birmingham, Sunderland and Liverpool accents because English spoken by people from these cities is often difficult to understand even for the British! People learning English by watching films on television can also find themself learning rude swear words by accident as well.

It is important to pronounce words properly when you are speaking English. If you cannot, you should perhaps speak slower to give people time to think about what you are saying and make an allowance for your accent.

The above is just some basic advice on how to improve and practise your English and if you wish, I could give you some more ideas.

I hope you are well and hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,

Joy

Hi Joy,

It's a long time since we exchanged messages last time, I was too busy with my work these past few days and the only desire for me is to sleep whenever I have some free time.

I believe that there is stringent professional certification system in all European countries and America. For one thing, acknowledged Chinese professionals like doctors and lawyers are not allowed to practice in Europe or America, unless they are cleared of the extremely tough professional examinations in the expertise and language. I also believe your particular profession – financial consulting – may fall into such category. I'm of the view that if you ever want to practice your original occupation in Britain, you have to attend the English professional training course and do a good job there before having the possibility of pursuing such career life.

I wish you are happy with your life and successful with your career development.

Regards,

Sam
