1) what’s a “dear John letter”?

2) if you step into a shop to just have a look around, and a shop assistant asks you “may i help you?” what should you say? can i say “just have a look.”?

“A dear John letter” must be from the old song, it is a song that someone asks for saperation, so you also can call it “a break-up letter”.

About the second question, I’m not sure about it. I have the same experience like you, so I don’t like to go shopping, those salespersons often keep nagging beside me. I’m afraid of them.
