You're right. Americans do talk fast, or at least it sounds that way to people from abroad. I know it can be difficult. I'm an American, but I know lots of people who had to learn, or are currently learning English. Don't be afraid to ask people to speak slower or to repeat things. And don't let people intimidate you.
