Help with the usage of prepositions

Can anyone tell me how to use proper preposition “in” or “at ” before the word university? I’ve seen “at (the) university” as well as “in the university”. Are both propositions interchangeable? If not, how different are the meanings of the two phrases? Look forward to your reply. Many thanks.
