Changchun 长春 ??

Has anyone ever been to Changchun?

I have a job offer from there. I am curious about the city.

I was hoping to work in Harbin or Shenyang in the north of China because I wish to study Mandarin.

Any advice?

We speak Mandarin with our friends and on the streets. believe me Mandarin is very common for all of us and it's not just speak in school or at work.

Mandarin is the official language of China. The Mandarin standard pronunciation is based on Beijing pronunciation; Mandarin dialect is based on the northern dialect, grammer based on the typical mordern chinese literature.

so, no places speak Mandarin as their native language in China. Beijing dialect is the most standard mandarin, but if you live Beijing for a while, you would find that there are still differences between Beijing dialect & standard Mandarin dialect.

MC – I was looking at Shenyang because it was the largest city, and the farthest south of the three. I used to live in Russia (for a year in highschool and sixth months in university) so I am somewhat used to cold weather.

aileench – Academically, this is true, but it terms of communicative language acquisition students of Mandarin are typically recommended to go either to the North East or else Beijing. Even though the Beijing dialect has certain peculiarities, as I understand it these peculiarities are starting to spread and standardize throughout the country. History shows that the dialect used in the capital city tends to become the standard for the rest of the country. This is why now even in the US students are being taught Beijing dialect rather than standard, academic Mandarin.
