the atheist buddhist and more

I recently read a letter to an atheist writer tht asked if his atheism and his following of Buudhist teachings were incompatible. it's an interesting question. Although there are some who have deified the Buddha, most do no believe him to be a god and in general, I think most Buddhists reject the idea of a divine creator. I think it would be quite easy to reconcile being an atheist and Buddhist.

What about other religions? Do you think it's possible, for example, to follow the teachings of Jesus (except for the parts where he claims to be the son of God, and such) and be, in other words, an atheist Christain? Or an atheist Muslim? I've known people who identify as Jews, but are also atheists, but their Jewish identity is more cultural/ethnic than religious.

Is it possible to take just the parts you like from a particular faith and trash the rest, or do you think you have to buy into the whole set of myths if you want to call yourself a Christian, Muslim, etc.

Yes, religions and their followers have always been good in ignoring and denying scientic facts. Nevertheless, Earth is not the centre of our planetary system.

I don't know what you mean by modern science but the kind of modern science that I know widely embraces Darwin's evolutionary theory.

His evolutionary theory is already sucsessfully beeing used because its application has already resulted in insights and developments in scientic fields from agriculture, to conservation, to genetics, to medicine, to forensics, to software engeneering, to biotechnology, to molecular biology, to organic chemistry by securing and improving crops, developing new drugs and vaccines against several diseases like polio, HIV and cancer, rescuing species threatened with extinction and solving crimes by using DNA fingerprints.

What has religion done to achieve such developments? 

Alas! Praying!  

It's your problem if you are more interested in abstruse conspiracy theories than in serious and reputable science-based theories.  

Evolution doesn't bother if anybody believes or disbelieves in its theory. It just happens right now in this very moment like it has done through the past and is continuing in the future.

Thanks a lot for your explanation. I hope it will help people to understand what evolution is about. There is so much confusion and hostility due to the missunderstanding of evolution theory although it is so important that people recognize that evolutionary biology has implications to a new century of medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and even law.

But at least in some areas of medicine, a basic public understanding of evolutionary principles may be essential in successfully waging the ongoing war with infectious diseases.

But this should only be a short excursion beyond the actual topic.

I don't want g's thread to be hijacked again by wandering from the subject.

How do you think, fizz, scientists devoleped successful innovations that have an amzing impact on our daily life (like the ones I've already posted in my previous post to you) by using the Darwinian evolutionary theory if the Darwinian evolution theory was false? It's probably not praying because the vast majority of the most qualified scientists are neither religious nor are they creationists (fortunately).
