Asking about umbrella

np36Super Member!

Dear Teacher,

            How are you?

May I ask about umbrella? What is the verb we use to describe when we would like to use the umbrella? Do we use " raise the umbrella"? and what would we use when we would like to stop using it? Do we use "close the umbrella"?

Another question about the barber? I'm not sure whether I caught what the barber said correctly or not? She asked " What gauge would you like to go?". Did she mean how short of the hair I would like to as she had to choose the correct hair trimmer?

Thank you very much. Please have a nice day.

Hi there! Great questions. You are right about the barber's question. "Gauge" refers to the trimmer the barber uses to cut hair. A higher gauge makes a shorter haircut.

As for umbrellas, we "open" and "close" umbrellas. So when you want to use an umbrella, the verb you'd use is "open."

Thanks!
