Is it true that America used to speak British accent prior to 4th July,1776? What made you people change the British English to American post 1776? I mean  the British accent is absoluely fine and it is used thoughout the UK and amongst various accents and dialects in UK the English accent is the finest of all, the one that we know as Received Pronuncation or BBC English. Why did not America follow the RP or BBC English? I still don’t have answer for this.

United States

This is a very interesting question, and one that is probably better suited for a linguist or history scholar! What I can say, however, is that there was not a “decision” to change the American accent at a particular moment; it’s just something that evolved over time, and is quite different in different parts of the US, as well.

Best,

Amy
