John:  You know there isn’t a whole lot to do here at night in Portland.

Nedra:  Yeah it kinda shuts down early.

John:  Yeah, in bigger cities aren’t there kinda late night activities where you can go and hang out and have a blast?

Nedra:  Yeah I know in San Francisco they have some clubs and raves going on.

John:  So, what is the difference between a club and a rave and… I know in England it’s pretty popular, raves, but how does that work?

Nedra:  Well I think a club will shut down pretty early and serve alcohol, but a rave is kind of more underground and people don’t know about it as much and it’s really hush-hush so you’re handed a flyer and you go there and um, there might be drugs there might not, but a lot of people are just there to dance and have fun.

John:  So is it legal?

Nedra:  Not really but it happens a lot.

John:  And there’s probably a big bunch of people there.

Nedra:  Yeah. And actually my roommate has told me about them and one time he got busted right after he paid like twenty-five bucks to get in.

John:  Oh really? So it’s kind of expensive?

Nedra:  Yeah it’s really expensive um, you really have to watch your back because the cops could bust at any time.

John:  And those things will go off all night?

Nedra:  Oh yeah. He said he did it for twelve hours straight one time seven to seven.

John:  Oh my God!

Nedra:  Yeah. He’s crazy.

Discussion

In the 1990’s, electronic music became very popular around the world. A common way to enjoy the music became all night dance parties called raves.
Raves are more than an average party. The experience is affected by the environment, the DJ, and the drugs that are commonplace.
Raves attract millions of people from all walks of life every weekend. However, neither John or Nedra have ever been to one.
Have you ever been to a rave? Do you like electronic music? Come to the MUSIC MIX message board and tell us all about it!
Hope you have a great week!
