Almost 2 1/2 years after releasing his smash hit debut Room for Squares, John Mayer returns with his sophomore album, Heavier Things. John won a Grammy[/def] award for the song “Your Body is a Wonderland” from his first album, so he’s got a lot to live up to with his second. Hopefully, Heavier Things will fulfill people’s expectations.

John Mayer’s new album sounds very similar to his first. He hasn’t changed his formula much. John’s songs are still full of beautiful guitar playing, romantic lyrics and his soft, dreamy, hopeful voice. John’s music is definitely a joy to listen to.
“Bigger Than My Body” is the first single from Heavier Things, and it’s a perfect John Mayer song. The lyrics express feelings of frustration about the present and excitement about the future. In the song, John is basically saying that he might not be as successful as he wants to be now, but in the future he will be accomplished and triumphant.
Check out some of the lyrics:
Yes, I’m grounded
Got my wings clipped
I’m surrounded by
All this pavement
Guess I’ll circle
While I’m waiting
For my fuse to dry
Someday I’ll fly
Someday I’ll soar
Someday I’ll be
Something much more
Cause I’m bigger than my body

Discussion
John Mayer’s first album is one of my all time favorites. I’ve had the CD for over two years and I still listen to it regularly. However, I’m not sure that I’m totally sold on his new album. For some reason, the songs don’t grab me like the ones on Room for Squares did. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely like Heavier Things, I’m just not sure it’s an improvement over John’s amazing first album.
Rock on,
Migs
