Room on Fire is made up of 11 short, tight, powerful songs. Each of them features the cold, tense, impatient voice of lead singer Julian Casablancas. His voice, his attitude and his lyrics are unique and interesting.
The first single from Room on Fire is called “12:51.” Check out some of the lyrics:
Kiss me now that I’m older
I won’t try to control you
Friday night’s a bit lonely
Take it slow but don’t warn me
We’d go out and get forties
Then we’d go to some party
Oh really, your folks are away now?
Alright I’m coming,
I’ll be right there
In the song, Julian is singing about his plans for a Friday night. He is confused about what he wants to do, but he knows that he wants to spend time with a girlfriend. Her parents are out of the house, so he decides to visit her.

I absolutely love The Strokes. I think they’re on par with some of the best rock bands in the world, like Coldplay, Radiohead and The White Stripes. For some people, however, The Strokes are an acquired taste. I have several friends who don’t like The Strokes music at all, but I think that’s because they never give it a chance to grow on them. They don’t take the time to listen to the music and the lyrics.
If you’re not a fan of The Strokes yet, give their music a chance. Listen to “12:51” a few times, and my bet is that you’ll start to like it.
