Steph: Ya know, jazz is making a comeback. Have you noticed that?
Derek: Yeah. I keep hearing little snippets of different jazz musicians and some new songs.
Steph: Yeah. There’s a lot of young players out now. And they really try to model themselves after guys like, I dunno, Miles Davis or other famous jazz musicians.
Derek: Yeah. I know. Jazz is really cool. I went to New Orleans and heard some of the original jazz.
Steph: Are you serious? Was it good?
Derek: Yeah. It was really good.
Steph: Sweet. Was it, um, did you go to a festival? Or?
Derek: No. It was just a tour.
Steph: Fun. Did you go alone?
Derek: No. I went with my friends and family.
Steph: Cool. Do you know how to play any jazz?
Derek: Nope. I played the trombone for two years, but that’s it.
Steph: Yeah. Sometimes it looks like it would be so easy. But then I know that it would be difficult.
Derek: It’s a very complex musical style.
Steph: Definitely. More complex than pop or rock.
Derek: Oh, yeah.

Discussion
I really enjoy listening to jazz music because it helps me to relax. I also like the audience participation. After the jazz musicians solo, the audience is expected to clap. The better the solo, the more the audience claps. That’s really fun. We have great jazz in Portland. If you ever come to visit, you should definitely check it out!
