When something comes out of left field, it is a complete surprise. In the movie Fight Club, I did not expect Brad Pitt and Edward Norton to be the same character. That just came out of left field for me.

In the example above, Paul Walker is talking about a controversial scene in his new movie. “People hate it,” he says, because it is so unexpected.
