U-turn (n.)
A u-turn has several meanings. The first meaning is literal driving term. If you're driving a car in one direction and you turn the car 180-degrees and begin driving in the reverse direction, you've made a u-turn. Note, the actual turn is shaped like the letter "u."
Example:
Jerry made a u-turn in the middle of the street.
U-turns are not legal in the City of Chicago.
The second meaning is figurative and refers to someone completely changing a stance or opinion on an issue. It is a commonly used in politics and government.
Example:
The House of Commons made a u-turn and decided to ban smoking in all public places.
I wish George Bush would make a u-turn and take measures against global warming.
The third meaning is very similar to the second and refers to the direction of one's life.
Example:
John was very unhealthy but made a u-turn. He quit smoking and starting doing yoga every day.
I worked 80 hours per week at a job that I hated until I made a u-turn. I now work 50 hours per week at a job that I love.
