John:  Dude, can I get a ride?

Derek:  Can you get a ride? Um, where are you going?

John:  Just down to the other side of town. It’s probably like a half an hour away.

Derek:  A half an hour.

John:  Yeah.

Derek:  That’s cool. It’s a little bit out of my way though.

John:  Which way are you going?

Derek:  Uh, the opposite direction.

John:  You don’t even know what direction I’m going!

Derek:  Yeah, well, I don’t know you.

John:  You know me! I’m going down to the, to, uh, southeast.

Derek:  To southeast.

John:  You know where the Aladdin is?

Derek:  Yeah.

John:  Yeah, right there.

Derek:  Oh, OK. Well, yeah, sure, OK.

John:  Cool. Um, when are you leaving?

Derek:  Right now. I’m in my car.

John:  Actually, you know, I need about ten minutes. Is that cool? Can you wait for me?

Derek:  I can wait just a little bit. Sure.

John:  Ah, thanks man. I appreciate it.

Derek:  No problem.

Discussion

Nice try Derek! Everyone knows it’s inconvenient to give people rides, but you have to do it sometimes. Have you ever heard of karma? Karma is the idea that if you do good deeds, good things will happen to you and vice versa. Well, this is what we call “car-ma”. Car-ma is the idea that if you give people rides when they are in need, you will get a ride when you need one. Is this a free ride? Not really. It’s like getting a ride on credit. I call that car-ma credit.
