Imagine a box. It is straight, rigid, and square. It’s also a contained, controlled space. If you think outside the box, you think creatively, in a less controlled or rigid way. You do new, exciting, and innovative work.

The rapper Lil’ Kim lives her life in a way that is outside the box. She is known for being daring and taking chances, like when she showed up at the MTV Video Music Awards with blue hair and a shocking outfit that didn’t leave much to the imagination. So it’s not surprising that she believes it is important for artists to think outside the box.

A person who thinks outside the box is the opposite of someone who is square. A square does things in a boring or conventional way. But someone who thinks outside the box is anything but conventional.
