Spoken English Course Day 10

Date: Mar 05 2011

Topic: Speaking

Author: andylu2

Hi again,

When I talk with non native speakers I often notice it's the little things that people have difficulty expressing.  This is one of the challenges of learning a new language.  Today I want to teach one of those unforgettable "little things" that you can use immediately in your speaking.

"Calling In".

This happens so often that we have a special phrase for it.  It is when someone doesn't go to work or school.  They call the boss or secretary or whoever to tell them they won't be coming into work for the day.  They usually need some kind of excuse or even a doctor's note.  It totally depends on the situation but if you "call in" it means that you phone the person responsible and tell them some reason you won't be able to go to work or school that day.  These could be both real reasons or totally fake excuses.  Here are a couple examples.

"I've got a huge headache today.  I think I'm going to call in and spend the day in bed".

"I wanted to watch the basketball game on TV so I just called in and made some stupid excuse.  It was a slow day at work and I don't think it was a big deal".

Pretty simple but very useful.

I've been making these lessons every day and will continue to do so.  I really am thankful for all the comments and support (likes) from everyone.

Here is an example of Spoken English Day 2

Again, here is an amazing course for improving spoken English fast
