A dog can bring a lot of joy into your life. But owning a dog also takes work. You need to play with your dog, keep him healthy and well groomed, and of course, take him for plenty of walks.
Dogs love going for walks. Just show a dog its leash and it will probably start wagging its tail with excitement. Walks aren’t just their chance to get some exercise, they’re also an opportunity to socialize. And sometimes, dog walks can be social experiences for dog owners, too. Hear Amy talk to Jason about taking her dog for walks.

Amy: I feel so bad, I didn’t take my dog for a good walk today.
Jason: Oh really? Can’t she just run around in the yard and stuff?
Amy: She can. We have a fenced backyard, and we definitely let her out there to play and do her business. But she needs a good walk every day, or she just has a lot of pent up energy, and I just feel really guilty.
Jason: Right on. Where do you take her on your walk?
Amy: Well, there’s a park just a couple blocks away from my house, so I usually take her there. But it’s not an off-leash park, so I have to risk either maybe getting in trouble, or just not let her off the leash. But she really prefers to be let off the leash so she can run around and play with other dogs.
Jason: Yeah, does she get into it with other dogs at all? Is that a problem?
Amy: No. Sometimes I get nervous that other dogs might not be really friendly, but my dog is the friendliest dog on the planet, and she’s also a little tiny thing that couldn’t really harm any other animals.
Jason: I don’t know, it sounds like fun though. You get to meet a lot of dogs.
Amy: There is such a great dog owner community. And once you own a dog, and you walk it, and you say hi to other dog owners, it’s almost as good as having, like, a secret handshake.

Discussion
Amy feels guilty because she didn’t take her dog for a good walk. She tries to walk her dog every day, even though she has a fenced yard where the dog can play. Amy thinks it’s important to give her dog plenty of exercise and opportunity to socialize with other dogs.
Jason asks Amy where she usually takes her dog for walks. Amy says they go to a park near her house. The park doesn’t allow dogs to be off-leash, but sometimes Amy lets her dog off-leash anyway because she loves to run around and play with other dogs. Amy enjoys taking walks with her dog because she likes belonging to the dog owner community.
Do you like going for dog walks? Where do people walk their dogs in your city?
