Oh, the body and the brain. Sometimes the two work together in perfect harmony. Other times, it feels as if they’re at war. And sometimes, we’re actually rooting for one side to win out over the other.

We use the word “matter” to refer to the physical stuff, to the body. And we can refer to the brain as the “mind.” If you have a stutter, you might tell yourself “mind over matter” when you need to speak in public. Or if you often get panicked on airplanes, you might try to use your brain to calm yourself, and say “mind over matter.”

There’s a storm brewing at the office, and Marni’s nervous because her baby is due at any moment. In this English lesson video, we learn the meaning of the English idiom “mind over matter,” and find out what advice celebrity Greta Vanderlake has for Marni.

Greta:  Gosh, people seem really uptight. What’s going on?

Marni:  Well, it’s just the storm out there looks like it’s getting really bad. People online are saying it might continue all night.

Greta:  So? I don’t get it. It’s just a little bit of rain. What’s the big deal?

Marni:  Well, first of all, it’s not just a little bit of rain. They’re saying it’s a major storm and second of all…

Greta:  Oh. I see. Are you, like, due?

Marni:  In two days.

Greta:  May I?

Marni:  Sure.

Greta:  Oh how sweet. Now listen, I understand what you’re going through.

Marni:  You do? I mean, I didn’t think you had kids. I just, I try to keep up with your career in magazines and stuff…

Greta:  No no, nothing like that. I understand what it’s like to have your body react in an inconvenient way at an inconvenient time.

Marni:  Oh…

Greta:  When I was in my starring role in Love Amongst the Lilacs, right before I was about to film my big romantic scene, I broke out in a terrible case of hives.

Marni:  Oh, what did you do?

Greta:  I told myself something I’m going to tell you now. Mind over matter.

Marni:  Mind over matter…what?

Greta:  The mind is a powerful instrument, even more powerful than the body. I simply told myself that my hives must clear up before my big scene and they did.

Marni:  Wow, that’s pretty amazing. But I don’t have hives. I have a baby.

Greta:  I’m not an idiot. You just need to tell yourself that you will not go into labor until this storm is past and you can get yourself to the hospital.

Marni:  Wow, do you really think it will work?

Greta:  Tell yourself. Tell the little Monchichi in there, whatever. Mind over matter. Works every time.

Marni:  OK. Thanks. Yeah. Couldn’t hurt. Mind over matter. Mind over matter. Mind over matter. Mind over matter.

Jeff:  If Marni goes into labor at the office, that would give me an opportunity to show her how well I handle the emergency. Because it would be an emergency. What did Ms. Vanderlake tell her? Well, I guess I just gotta think “mind over matter.” She has to have that baby here.

Greta thinks that everyone at the office seems stressed out, and she asks Marni why. Marni tells her that it’s because the storm outside looks pretty bad. Marni is particularly stressed because she is supposed to give birth to her baby in two days!

Luckily, Greta has some advice for Marni. Once, she broke out in a bad skin rash before she had to star in a movie. She told herself “mind over matter,” and the hives went away. She suggests that Marni do the same, so she won’t have her baby during the storm.

Meanwhile, Jeff is wondering what Greta and Marni are talking about. Unlike Marni, he hopes that she will have the baby during the storm. That way, he can show her how well he handles an emergency. Jeff says “mind over matter” to try to control events, too.

Friendlover,

if you’re telling yourself “it’s okay” because you’ve watched that done in films but you’re not really believing in it, you wouldn’t be doing yourself any good : ). Placebo effect is unpredictable  and doesn’t cure everything; I think it can only prove effective if there’s a strong correlation with what’s bothering you and your state of mind. But for the most part, the power of placebo remains a mystery just like somatoform disorders.

Brain is absolutely awesome. It’s miraculous. It cam control body for sure. Talking about placebo effect, I understand. But if I tell my self “Everything is OK” while it’s not my brain will be knowing this. So does that really work? Brain can trick on body but can it trick on itself?

It is easier to understand how it works when we go the other way around, not explaining how the body reacts when we want it to calm down but how fast it brews symptoms of anxiety like pain or tachycardia. Mind over matter works best in the worst way cause we are not used to relax quickly :(

Right, Right Julito, don’t we all trust our pretty-looking dentists  and the expensive prices  they charge  us : )?  You’d be amazed how daily oral evaluations can  help stave off  anxiety, headaches, runny noses, tuberculosis, high-blood pressure, insomnia, etc, hehe , just kidding! : )

A clean mouth fixes everything !  no?

I still can’t understand why Jeff is desperately trying to prove himself to Marni for. I believe he’s still not over the fact that he isn’t the father. I’m hoping he doesn’t develop some sort of worrying obsession with her . He needs to face the music and content himself with being the child’s godfather if he somehow really wants to be part of this baby’s upbringing : )

I think the concept of ‘Mind over Matter’ is hugely overrated. Some people think they can mind-control everything and despite many disappointments they remain persistent in their beliefs. It’s okay, I don’t judge ; ). But, if I’m in a cab with someone who’s in labor and the driver is feeding  us with that ‘mind over matter lecture’ I might not be too gullible and polite  : ). I think us, and our developed minds are trying to take on too much sometimes, there are events in life that just don’t require our willpowers in order to occur. The case of Marni is one of them, reciting “mind over matter” is just a mental decompression that brings positive feelings and calmness; but I doubt it is delaying her labor in any ways. So, neither she nor anyone else around her can afford to be too complacent :)

Don’t think I’m a “mind over matter “skeptic, I’m not. I’m well aware of the power of the mind. I mean, nobody had mentally quieted down a storm in my presence but I’m familiar with what’s called, placebo effect.  In a nutshell it means belief can miraculously provide relief. For instance,  many persons suffering from mild ailments were administered  dummy pills which contain no curative ingredients, (“sugar pill”), amazingly showed signs of health improvements.  Or since we’re on the topic of babies, I’ve read that children think applying band-aids on their tummies can instantly relieve stomach ache : ). There’s no denying what the human mind is capable of, I agree, but the world isn’t at its mercy.  Sometimes “mind over matter” works, other times it just doesn’t matter.

Right now  this event can unfold either way: John’s obstetric obsession might finally come handy or Greta’s mind power can help Marni contain until the storm passes and seek professional hands instead. But I think the lightning may have caused Marni to experience the effect of pregnancy lightening, just my two cents : )

Hold on Marni!, somebody call John to the scene please , quick! : ))

mind or brain is the commander of our body it commands all the actions and reactions of body thats why we can control physical activities after making lil effort on it. we would have certainly faced situations of mind over matter and i personaly belive it works. anger control manegment is an example of mind over matter and to quit drugs for the drug addicted person also a kind of mind over matter, its only possible with great mental strength and prowess of mind. i also agrees that at some situations this hypothesise got failed like when we all of sudden make grimace to show disgust or pain or utter a yelp at some pinch or say ooh ahh aouch ommm etc. there are some funny type of situations exists too when we react abruptly at some sneaky actions and can’t control a big blast of laugh.

My example is  silly, but nevertheless. If I catch a cold I blow my nose like ten times per minute, this is horrible) But if something interesting or exciting draw my attention away from my nose, I feel good and forget about my cold. But then if accidentally I have a mind in my head: “It seems like my nose doesn’t disturb me”, after a minute I am already searching for the hanky. If I try to apply all the power of my mind on my nose, it doesn’t work. So my mind spoiled  all)

Some people can even stop their hearts by mind, but I even cannot stop my nose)  It seems like mind-over-matter-skill is like a rocket science for me.

julito you are lucky with your pretty doctor  ;) My dentist is a lady too :D She is an excellent doctor. I devoted to her.  I can’t give it a shot to change her for handsome man-dentist. :D

you know, it is easier for me to deliver lots of children than to bear the toothache. The very thought about any dental manipulations shocks me.

I completely agree, i’m convinced that the mind is so powerful that it can control not just our bodies but also our lives. I read a few books about this subject: one of them the power to control your life, i believe we can do anything no matter how difficult and challenging it is if only we believe in ourselves, we owe it to ourselves.

Regarding Lesya  post.  In my country , in remote areas the person in charge of delivering a baby  is called comadre, which it means in English midwife . I have seen  films that  when the woman went into  labor  , the family members summoned up the midwife  and upon arriving she started yelling out:  I need hot water, a washbasin , tear apart a sheet , the baby is coming !!!! . The miracle of life, no asepsia at all, still so many survive , of course under normal conditions: as Lesya put it.

LESYA,  I trust my dentist, besides, she is so pretty.   jejejeje
