You know the kind of song. It’s catchy, it makes you want to dance, and you can’t stop singing it. Meghan Trainor has written a song just like this right out of the gates. No one can stop talking about “All About That Bass.” It’s the kind of song you go to bed singing and wake up singing all over again.
The song also has a powerful message for young women. It teaches women to celebrate whatever size they are, and not to worry about how they look. What’s most important is confidence, and knowing how to work it when you’re out in the world. The way that you present yourself is something that people notice, so pay attention to how you’re doing it.
Do Lily and Marni appreciate the song’s message? Find out by reading today’s English lesson about a new pop song.

Lily: So, Marni.
Marni: Yes?
Lily: Have you been listening to the radio at all?
Marni: Not too much.
Lily: I have this song stuck in my head. It’s called “All About that Bass,” I think.
Marni: Oh, I have heard that song.
Lily: It’s Meghan Trainor.
Marni: Yes, that song’s very catchy.
Lily: It’s so catchy.
Marni: And what a great message!
Lily: Yeah, really. I just watched the video for it, too. And it’s got all these people dancing and just enjoying being themselves.
Marni: Right.
Lily: And it’s really cool.
Marni: I think it’s a great message to hear, especially for young women.
Lily: Mm-hm.
Marni: To celebrate whatever size you are. It doesn’t matter.
Lily: Yeah.
Marni: It’s just, “You’re great. You’re perfect the way you are.”
Lily: It’s all about how you work it. That’s the way it is.
Marni: Yes.
Lily: It’s about how you present yourself. And confidence is the most attractive thing, I think.
Marni: Confidence. Absolutely! Yeah. No, I think it’s great. I’ll be interested to see what other songs she has and what else she does.
Lily: Yeah.
Marni: It’s kind of a cool message to come out right out of the gates.
Lily: Mm-hmm.

Lily and Marni are talking about Meghan Trainor’s music video, “All About That Bass.” They agree that the song has an important message for young women, which is that all women are beautiful just as they are. As Lily points out, confidence is more attractive than being skinny, so women should stop worrying so much about how they look.
Marni also wonders what other songs Meghan Trainor will write. “All About That Bass” is easy to sing along with and has such a strong message. Will her next song have the same qualities? It seems like both Lily and Marni will be paying attention to this new singer’s career.
What do you think of the song, “All About That Bass?” Does the video teach a lesson to young women?
