There’s no shortage of films about war. In most, a battalion of soldiers go up against another, some on foot, some in tanks, and some in planes. The success of the movie depends on the actors, but more importantly, the story. The new World War II film “Fury” stars Brad Pitt, and it tells of an incredible event.

Brad Pitt’s character “Wardaddy” leads five soldiers during World War II. They fight from inside a tank, which allows them to experience horrible things together while at the same time build strong friendships. In the end, Wardaddy and his soldiers… only five men all together… must fight a huge number of Germans. Their success is highly unlikely. Will Wardaddy lose all of his men?

Learn more and find out Lily and Marni’s opinions by reading today’s English lesson about “Fury.”

Marni:  How do you feel about a war movie?

Lily:  It depends on which war. Is it World War II, or World War I, or the Korean War? I don’t know. Vietnam?

Marni:  I’m thinking of the new film “Fury” which is a World War II film about…

Lily:  Is that the one about the tanks?

Marni:  Yeah. So, Brad Pitt stars in it, and he’s not looking so good. I mean, he looks…

Lily:  He’s grizzled.

Marni:  He’s grizzled.

Lily:  He’s grizzled a little bit.

Marni:  He’s in battle. He doesn’t look…

Lily:  He doesn’t look his normal Brad Pitt-ly self.

Marni:  Exactly. And Shia LaBeouf is in it. Haven’t seen him in a while.

Lily:  Yeah.

Marni:  Yeah. So, it’s about this battalion, I guess. I’m not sure if that’s the right terminology. But they lose a lot of their men. And so there are five of them left, and they still go up against the Nazis.

Lily:  It’s like one tank against Nazi Germany.

Marni:  Yeah, “Fury.” I think it looks interesting. I don’t know how historical it is.

Lily:  Maybe we should go see it.

Marni:  Let’s do.

Lily:  OK.

Marni tells Lily about a new movie in theaters. It’s called “Fury” and it stars Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf. In the film, the men are soldiers during World War II who fight from a tank. They are two of a group of five men who find themselves fighting a large battalion of Germans. The chance of winning is extremely small.

While the war story makes them curious, Lily and Marni talk more about the actors. Brad Pitt isn’t looking as handsome as usual. Shia LaBeouf stars in the movie, too, which surprises Marni a little because she hasn’t seem him act in a movie recently. Lily says that she’d like to see “Fury” with Marni, and Marni likes the idea.

How do you feel about war movies? Are there too many, or not enough? Will you see “Fury?”

Well, films about War World II are often epic when they are made by Americans. Also, many of them are interesting. But we can’t deny World War II was felt as the apocalypse by the people who lived in those years. A lot of soldiers and civil people died. Beautiful cities was destroyed by the militar attacks. There isn’t nothing to admire about wars, they are just people killing people.

I’ll see Fury. My country saw many deaths and films about World War 2 are always very special and sometimes hard to watch. I don’t like films made by Russians, they lies very much about real facts about ukrainian part in that terrible fights.

Save Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor etc. are epic. Hope that Fury will be great too.

The World War II was terrible, it was a shock to the world. Every Russian family has relatives who have suffered in this war. There are many movies and books about the World War II. But I think that it’s still necessary to shoot new movies and books. These movies will never be enough. My grandfather went missing in the war, my grandmother and parents have experienced the devastation and starvation  of war, and the post-war years. There are old people alive still who remember that war . But it is necessary that young people know and to prevent such horrors in the future.

I respect Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf they starred in that movie.

An excellent question! and one that I have wondered about for many years. Indeed, why do people enjoy watching violence? it is a complete mystery to me. I do strongly believe in the connection between violent TV programmes/ Films/ video games, and the increased violence in our Societys, I would really like to know why violence is promoted so widely. Isn’t it strange that gentleness, respect and care are not promoted more on TV/ films/video games? no doubt some would say “Ah well, that would be boring”

Best war movies are movies that send messages against war but at the same time glorify the strength, courage, love, companionship, brotherhood , unselfish acts, caring, sharing, all the key humane ingredients of what makes us human and that we ought to live a non-hatred, meaningful life. Even better, so that we can fight against all war motives with our best ability. That’s why I like to watch a good war movie.

For me , I see that there are too many good movies about war in our world cenima industries.

And ” Yes” I will see ” Fury”

I remember very well that bad time, when I was only 5 years old, living near Naples, one of the most tormented italian city.I still hear the bad noise of the sirens (alarms) when we had to run..Thanks the americans the peace returned in Europe in 1945.I saw the international trailer of this movie, only ,because it will arrive in Italy on january 2015,but I don’t believe  I will watch that. Those heroic  few people ,in one broken tank, won a battle with the enemy. It is a good idea, like Marni said, to know how historical this movie is, and to appreciate the peace all over the world.

PS: In any kind of war, anyway, there are never winners, but all and only losers.
