We celebrate birthdays and weddings with big, beautiful, delicious cakes. But what if you want the sweet treat and there isn’t a holiday to celebrate? Or what if you don’t want a whole cake just for yourself? A cupcake is the perfect size for when you want to bite into some sugary frosting and soft cake any day of the year.
Cupcakes have become so popular that in some cities there are bakeries that only sell the small cakes. You can walk into a bakery and see many different kinds of cupcake flavors for customers to choose from. But even if there are many choices, cupcakes aren’t for everyone. Some people think that they’re too sweet.
Marni tells Brian about how much she loves these small cakes. Find out more in today’s English lesson about this popular dessert.

Marni: I just passed by this amazing bakery. And the cupcakes, they were just calling out to me, “Eat me! Eat me!”
Brian: But, Marni, it’s 9:00am. Do you love sweets that much?
Marni: I do. I have the worst sweet tooth. I just want to treat myself. Even though, like you said, it’s nine in the morning. I could justify breakfast cupcakes.
Brian: Desserts aren’t my thing. I’m really into salty foods. So I crave french fries and popcorn. Cupcakes just aren’t my thing.
Marni: I guess not. I just love sugary food. A really good chocolate cupcake with some simple frosting. Just the best!
Brian: Maybe if you topped it with bacon, I would be more interested.
Marni: There are bacon cupcakes. And that would certainly qualify as breakfast cupcake.
Brian: Well, then, let’s go get some breakfast.

Discussion
Marni has a big sweet tooth and loves cupcakes. Even though they’re actually a dessert, she wants to eat cupcakes for breakfast. She especially enjoys a simple chocolate cupcake with good frosting. Sometimes it’s difficult for her to walk by a bakery without stopping in to pick up a few cupcakes.
Brian doesn’t share Marni’s love for sweets. He prefers salty foods like french fries and popcorn and doesn’t really like cupcakes. But Brian does love bacon, and he was excited to hear that there may be cupcakes with bacon on them. He might try cupcakes after all.
Do you like sweets? Do you have a favorite kind of cupcake?
