Oh, summer time. What a lovely, sunny, magical time of year. Summer is filled with vacations, camping, friends, delicious ice cream, and trips to the ocean. It’s the time of year to revel in the golden glow of the long summer days. If the dark and chilly winter makes you depressed, then now is the time to open your arms to the sunshine and soak it up!
It’s the dog days of summer here in the United States. The dog days are usually the hottest days of summer. They are so hot that dogs (and humans!) tend to get very lazy. The heat just melts our strength away. This is also the time of year when the sun is in the same part of the sky as the star Sirius. Sirius is sometimes called the Dog Star.
Andy loves the sun, and is sad that it’s the dog days of summer. Listen as he tells Marni about his end-of-summer plans.

Andy_H: Oh, Marni, I am…I’m getting a little bit depressed.
Marni: Oh, no! What’s wrong?
Andy_H: Well, it’s the dog days of summer, and it means that this nice, warm, golden glow is going to start to go away.
Marni: Well, it’s not over yet.
Andy_H: I mean, what? We got, like, three more weeks, or something? And then, pretty soon, it will be September. And before you know it, I’m going to be hanging up my Christmas Tree.
Marni: OK, OK. Just slow down a little bit.
Andy_H: OK.
Marni: You need to stop and appreciate this moment. And just revel in the sunshine that’s out, the heat, sitting outside with a good book and a cold beverage. It’s lovely.
Andy_H: It is lovely. I know I do tend to flip out this time every single year.
Marni: Mmm hmm.
Andy_H: I just…I feel like I want to coordinate some kind of awesome, you know, end-of- summer camping trip. Just me, all my friends, just so that I can soak it up one last time.
Marni: Absolutely. That’s a fabulous idea.
Andy_H: You…uh…want to go camping?
Marni: I love camping! Absolutely. Let’s do it!

Andy tells Marni that he is a little bit depressed. He says that it’s the dog days of summer. That means that summer is, sadly, almost over. Pretty soon, the golden glow of his tan will fade, and it will be time to put up his Christmas Tree.
Marni tells Andy that he should slow down a little bit. There’s still plenty of time left to revel in the sunshine. He should enjoy these last few weeks of summer. They are lovely. Andy agrees, and decides to coordinate a camping trip for him and his friends. He invites Marni, who absolutely wants to come along.
What do you do to stay cool during the dog days of summer? Do you have any end-of-summer activities planned?
