November 2, 2012

Earlier in the morning I was almost late for the class at 8 o'clock. I hate to make my students wait but feeling the tiredness of all week all over my body, the alarm of my clock was unable to wake me up. It was almost 7 o'clock when I opened my eyes. I don't remember how I got out of the bed, washed my face and put on my clothes that I had picked a night ago before going to bed. (I always pick my clothes a night before. I never pick things randomly.) Okay, I looked glamorous in the mirror. "Oh, wait. I forgot make-up." I applied eye liner on my eyes slightly, and then mascara and what else? Nothing more. The less the better.

“It is going to be a hard but beautiful day. Go to the school now and don’t let any of your naughty students ruin your enthusiasm.” Inspiring myself to the fullest, I headed towards the door. “Wait, did I hear my tummy’s scream? Oh, yes, I forgot the breakfast but I have no time.” I changed my route to the kitchen to get a rusk which protects me from feeling nauseated when I don’t have enough time to have a good breakfast. “Alright, now, time to go.”

A few minutes later, I found myself in the street waiting for a cab. “Good, here it comes. What a lucky day. It is rush hours in the morning but today is my lucky day. No need to wait for an empty cab.” The school is only 5-minutes drive to my house but I noticed that lots of things could happen in just 5 minutes like buzzing along the busy streets filled with men in suits, women in formal clothes, students in uniforms and other people rushing for work… Amidst this rush, one scene caught my attention in my cab ride. Lots of people were walking quickly on the pavement. Apparently they were rushing to appear at work right on time. Everyone was just following their steps on the line of the pavement which was saved for themselves. One man, though, got out of the building above the pavement suddenly and he almost bumped into another man. Both men moved aside to give way, but they moved to the left at the same time. Then to the right. One of the men pouted about the situation and I could read the look on his face : “I am late for work and you are standing on my way. Just go away.” The other man, on the other hand, made a very polite move. He stopped, bowed a little bit, with a warm smile on his face, moved his hand very kindly to give way to the sulky man. A few words dropped from his lips. As far as I could read his lips, his kind gesture was, “After you, sir.” I looked right at the face of the sulky man thinking he might have changed his gesture to a warm one, but his face still looked sulky and discontended whereas the kind man still kept smiling. Then I noticed something. The kind man was in ordinary clothes, not like those collar-and-tie men. The sulky man was in a neat suit. “Maybe he is rushing just like me or he is possibly late for work or a meeting.”Yeah, maybe, but it is not that hard to put a warm smile on your face in the morning and show some kindness in return for a polite action that you received.”

Looking at the sulky man in suit, I would expect him to show politeness in return for that warm smile on the face of the stranger that he bumped into randomly on the street. Then I thought, politeness does not come from the outer appearance. It has nothing to do with one’s expensive and trendy clothes, nor with whether one is in suit or in a t-shirt and jeans. Politeness comes from deep within. It comes with the way one is raised up and how beautifully one looks out of the window of his heart and sees the world as it is.

Happy encountering with polite people wherever you go! Smile

Moriza,

I like milk but I like yoghurt more.

I like cracked egg but not boiled egg.

I don't like sugar itself. I love sugarfree coffee, and sugarless tea.

I love spaghetti. I love Italian food, indeed.

So I guess I am not a real MESS. Laughing

Hello Dear Semiha!

Hope you are doing gr8 with your teaching!

That's true politness has nothing to do with dressing or social status, it has to do something with generosity. Generosity gives you more bliss compared to any other riches.

In nutshell, Ghalib eloquently say it in few words:

In a begger's guise Ghalib!

Spectacles of generocity, I see

Hello Moriza,

Thanks a lot for your comment. I must confess that you surprised me with your lovely comment. Hearing these appreciative words from an insightful and thoughtful woman like you did my heart good.

I use mascara and eye liner. Sometimes to have a more glamorous look, I apply some blusher on my face to color my cheeks and emphasize my cheekbones. Little but effective tips, I guess you already know. Wink

Politeness is what I most appreciate in life but unfortunately, there are some rude people on earth. If rude and bad-mannered people did not exist, the value of politeness would not be recognized, though. Hope politeness conquers the whole world some day. Innocent

Hello Mess

You are a super teacher as a writer too! Splendidly!!!

Reading your story,I was feeling like a witness of the events you so colourfully described.Really,I was following all your steps and seeing evrth around you.It was amazing. One funny point that made me laugh -"Do you use Mascara?"

Politness...Some years ago I was in Czech Republic.Once, walking in the morning,I met a lot of people on my way,and all of them (seeing me at first) greeted with me,wishing a good day.It was somehow unusual as it was not acceptable in my country and very pleasant at the same time.I felt myself happy, happy just from their simple and kind words.

Sometimes a good word or a smile can help us to look at things or situation,or problem,or even the world from another side, light, view. It is very important to share good feelings with others.

"Do not get tired of doing what is good.Don,t get discourage and give up,for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time."

Hi Snoopy,

I got a bad reputation for being a strict teacher in the school. It's not because I treat my students bad or rudely, but because most of them failed the exam, and they look for the guilt in me, not in themselves. No matter how hard I did my best to grade their papers high, they still got low marks. I taught them very well. I repeated every thing at every chance constantly but unless they go over the subjects on a daily basis, they will fail. They depended on cheating but dividing them into two different groups (A and B) ruined their plans. The looks on their face made it so clear. "Oh, really? We have two different groups. Hell!" I don't understand why cheating seems so attractive. It is an open betrayal to the cheater himself, classmates, and the teacher. Besides, the answer of my questions were written in their notebooks. Those who studied diligently and listened to me attentively got high marks.

Anyway, all in all I am known as a strict teacher! How fun! Surprised

I'm very intrigued at how  some people could be so polite in the early morning, that's why I admire morning people so much. The positive energy they transmit is more than substitute for coffee or tea; it's rays of adrenaline that sparks the body and mind without burning the lips ;).

Unfortunately, some people find it very irritating when they're treated politely if their day isn't going so well. I don't see it that way, when you're treated politely you should pass it on to the next person you meet. It should be contagious and untreatable ;)

I associate politeness with Humility, Respect, and Generosity.  Spare me the professional dress code propaganda, please ;)

Nice observation, Mess. Now go and show how polite you are to your students and grade them leniently.

:)
