“WDCS” says that gillnets are a threat especially to animals that seek their food at the bottom of the sea like catfish, porpoises, crabs, some sharks and some fish. Down there they easily get caught in a net and drown. Thus to save at least the porpoises scientists now have developed some kind of little computer that can be attached to a net. It makes noises that either don’t sound too pleasant from a dolphin’s point of view or noises that dolphins use when in peril.
Critics say that this solution is not ideal as animals other than dolphins still are in danger and as these things scare animals off places that should be part of their natural ecosystem.

Here’s some kind of addendum to the month of February. As I gave other news a higher priority, these news just had to wait until early March 1st (military time) or the last day of February in the late evening in the USA: After a car-accident in Viborg (Denmark) 37 tons of fish were lost as the impact threw them onto the road, making them inedible. Nobody got hurt, but due to reasons of hygiene the road was blocked for hours to ensure proper cleaning of the road. (“Tagesschau” on February 8th)
At least it can be savely presumed that non of these fish was critically endangered.

The latest example of National Geographic also contains a report about overfishing. It says:
>30% of all the specimens of fish in the sea suffer from overfishing.
>If you buy fish, you should make sure that it has the “Pro Planet”-label written on it, because fish that is labeled with these words was caught by using methods which reduce overfishing.
>An average German eats 15 kg of fish every day, while the people of some Asian countries eat ten times as much fish.
>Sharks and sturgeons are the families of fish that have the most critically endangered specimens.
>Only 0,5% of our seas are protected areas, while on land the number is 15%.
>The North-Atlantic and the Western, the Southern and the North-West Pacific are the most popular marine areas for fishing.
>Each year the ships from all over the world combined have a dead bycatch of 20 tons.
>The REWE-supermarket-chain is known for selling fish with the “Pro Planet”-label only and for actively supporting the fight against overfishing.

According to the German newspaper “Focus” the number of European wild fish has decreased rapidly during the last few years – despite serious attempts to keep our lakes and rivers clean. According to the very same article there may be some political meeting coming soon. They say that politicians and experts from the European Union may come together soon to decide how for example to catch wild fish in a more environmentally friendly way or what boats and ships should be like to make them less disturbing.

( As always they also accept help from non-members. )
