Want to start a band but can’t afford the instruments? Just use your five-finger discount. The Flaming Lips, an alternative rock band from Oklahoma City, got their start by stealing musical instruments from a local church. Over 20 years later and the band is still going strong. In 2002, they were named one of the “50 bands to see before you die.”

I tried to talk to Taylor about the band but he just got so excited. Listen to Taylor talk about The Flaming Lips.

Taylor

Taylor:  The Flaming Lips have a new album coming out in early April and it’s called At War with the Mystics. The new album, ah, is really noisy, but not noisy in, like, a grunge metal sort of way, but it’s really noisy because it’s been sat on for several months. And, you know, The Lips, they sit there on their computers and they tinker with every single bit of sound that goes into the album. When it’s done, it’s just amazing, you know. The influences that they’re showing on this album range from Queen to Prince to, ah, psychedelic rock from the 60s to Barry White. You know, they kind of hit all of the points of reference in American music.

Discussion

The Flaming Lips are known for their psychedelic, alternative rock sound and their spaced-out lyrics. They also put on a pretty good show, using lots of animal costumes, cool light tricks, balloons and a bubble machine.
