Rap music began in New York City in the 1970s. Rap, also known as hip-hop, has its roots in the African-American community. All of the first hip-hop artists were African-Americans. Since the 70s, it has become very popular on mainstream radio.
Even though rap has changed over the years, it’s still unusual to see an Australian woman in the hip-hop music scene. Iggy Azalea has been a surprising artist who has found success in American hip-hop. She is known as much for her musical style as she is for her fashion style.
Lily and Jessica really like one of her music videos and her songs. Find out more in today’s English lesson about Iggy Azalea.

Jessica: So Lily, I just saw Iggy Azalea’s video for her song, “Fancy.”
Lily: Oh, yeah!
Jessica: It is a total throwback to the movie, “Clueless.”
Lily: I just realized that. I’ve heard that song on the radio so many times. It’s so catchy. I love it.
Jessica: It is very catchy. I’m not so sure how I feel about her. I just don’t know if she’s authentic. I know she’s Australian…
Lily: Yeah.
Jessica: ... which is so bizarre that she does rap.
Lily: But I kind of love it, though. It’s so funny to me how all of these random people are coming into the mainstream and doing really interesting things with music today.
Jessica: Exactly. I wonder who her influences are. Because at first I thought it was Nicki Minaj.
Lily: It does kind of sound like that. I think this is one of the great things about the US music scene is we’re always really interested in finding and importing different cultural things from different countries. And taking that and just melding it in with our own stuff.
Jessica: Well, she’s definitely a huge hit here.
Lily: Totally. I love that song.

Lily is really enjoying Iggy Azalea’s catchy songs. She loves her music video, which was a throwback to an old movie. Even though it seems a little bizarre that a woman from Australia is so popular in the American music scene, Lily thinks it’s great that Iggy is melding two different cultures.
Jessica agrees that Iggy’s music is fun, but she’s not sure if Iggy is authentic. Since hip-hop has roots in America, Jessica isn’t sure that her music can be real hip-hop. She wonders who Iggy’s influences are and agrees that Iggy has become a big hit in the US.
Do you listen to Iggy Azalea? What do you think about an Australian woman in the hip-hop music scene?
