The Dixie Chicks are made up of two sisters, Martie and Emily, who each play instruments, and Natalie Maines, who possesses one of the best voices on the planet. They’ve been together since 1995, and they released their first album in 1998. Wide Open Spaces became the biggest selling album ever for a country duo or group. The Dixie Chicks received two Grammys for Wide Open Spaces, one for Best Country Album and the other for Best Country Vocal Performance By A Duo/Group.
Their newest album, Home, is just as good, if not better than Wide Open Spaces. It features the hit song “Landslide” which was originally performed by Stevie Nicks[/def]. Check out some of the lyrics:
Well I’ve been afraid of changin’
because I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder,
even children get older
And I’m getting older too….
So, take my love…
take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
and if you see my reflection
in the snow-covered hills…
well the landslide will bring it down
The landslide will bring it down

Discussion

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’m not a fan of country music. However, there are a few country artists and bands out there that I can appreciate. The Dixie Chicks are one of them. I really like several of their songs, and I can actually listen to all three of their albums. The key for me is Natalie Maines. Her voice is so good that it’s hard not to enjoy listening to her, no matter what style of music she’s singing.
If you like country, you’re probably a Dixie Chicks fan already. If you don’t like country, you should still check them out. They’re truly a great band.
Rock on,
Migs
