Until just four years ago, 21 year-old Good Charlotte lead guitarist Benji Madden had never played a guitar, and singer Joel Madden, his identical twin brother, had never sung a note. However, the two have quickly made Good Charlotte one of the most popular bands in the world. With spiky hair and lots of piercings, Joel and Benji are true rock stars.

Good Charlotte is Joel and Benji Madden and their high school buddies from Maryland: drummer Aaron; bass player Paul, and guitar player Billy. Their first album came out in late 2002 and it’s filled with catchy punk rock songs that have been getting a lot of play on the radio and MTV.
One of the most popular songs on Good Charlotte’s album is called “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous.” It’s a song about rich people and celebrities who complain about how hard their lives are. Check out some of the lyrics:
I’d like to see them spend a week
Livin’ life out on the street
I don’t think they would survive
If they could spend a day or two
Walkin’ in someone else’s shoes
I think they’d stumble and they’d fall
They would fall
Lifestyles of the rich and the famous
They’re always complainin’
Always complainin’...
If money is such a problem
Well they’ve got mansions
Think we should rob them

Discussion

“We want kids to come to our shows and forget about everything,” says Joel. “Whatever their problems are, we want them to be focused on the energy, have a good time, and then go back to their normal life tomorrow.”
I like that quote. Joel seems like a cool guy, and Good Charlotte seems like a cool band. They don’t take themselves too seriously, but they do make great music. It’s fun to listen to and it does take you away from your normal life for a few minutes.
Rock on,
Migs
