Sometimes the simplest dates like a picnic in the park, watching a movie on the couch, or making dinner at home can be the best. With the right person, even the most ordinary activities can feel special and romantic. On the other hand, getting flown to Tahiti in a private helicopter or something would be pretty cool too.
The pressure to come up with the perfect date is especially strong on Valentine’s Day. Some couples prefer to do something low-key for V-day, but for most, the usual dinner and a movie just won’t cut it. Listen to Marni tell Amanda about her best Valentine’s Day date ever.

Marni: I was thinking about the best Valentine’s date I’ve ever been on.
Amanda: OK.
Marni: So I had just started dating my boyfriend two weeks before Valentine’s Day. February 2nd. It felt like all this pressure, like we’re starting to date right before Valentine’s Day, what do you do?
Amanda: Oh yeah, that is pressure.
Marni: And, so, honestly, it was an amazing date. He made me dinner, which nobody had ever done before. Isn’t that so sweet? And it was a really great dinner.
Amanda: Did you have a connection while you were eating?
Marni: We were very googly eyed at each other, and there was a lot of chemistry going on.
Amanda: So it definitely wasn’t a blind date, because he was your boyfriend…
Marni: Well, we had literally just started dating, so we’re getting to know each other, but it’s Valentine’s Day, he made me a bunch of mixed CDs, made me dinner…And, you know, it was just very sweet.
Amanda: Did sparks fly?
Marni: Absolutely, hello, we’re still together!
Amanda: Well, was he very spontaneous that night?
Marni: I thought making dinner was very spontaneous.
Amanda: Well what else?
Marni: I bought him a shirt.
Amanda: That’s very spontaneous. It’s totally off the cuff.
Marni: Well what are you going to do? It’s not very romantic. But it’s like two weeks in. You’re like, “What am I gonna get the guy?”

Marni and her boyfriend had only been dating for two weeks when their first Valentine’s Day came around. She was worried about how to celebrate Valentine’s Day since it was so early in their relationship.
But her boyfriend came up with a great date. He made her dinner and burned some mixed CDs for her. It was low-key but very romantic. Plenty of sparks flew.
Amanda asks Marni what else happened on the date. Marni says that not a lot else happened. Since she and her boyfriend hadn’t been together very long, she didn’t want to do anything too serious or crazy. But it was a great night, and Marni and her boyfriend are still together today. What do you think they should do this year for Valentine’s Day? What was your best date ever?
