When people are in love, they want to kiss and hold each other tight. But where’s the best place to do that?

Public displays of affection, or PDAs, can be cute, like when you see a young couple holding hands in the park. But they can also be gross, like a drunk couple totally making out on the street.

Some people think public displays of affection are a harmless and fun way to express love. Others think love is better expressed in private. It turns out that in Jason and Devan’s new relationship, there is one of each kind of person. Watch the video to see which is which.

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Jason:  Thanks for taking me to see Slumdog Millionaire. I’d been wanting to see it.

Devan:  Isn’t that movie great?

Jason:  Yeah.

Devan:  Hey…

Jason:  Hey…I don’t…Just…

Devan:  What?

Jason:  I’m not really into public displays of affection, you know?

Devan:  What do you mean?

Jason:  PDA. I just think it’s really, like, I don’t know…It’s, like, gross, you know. I see people kissing on the street, I’m just kind of like, “Get a room!” you know?

Devan:  When I see people on the street, I think, “Oh, what a happy, cute couple showing their affection for each other.”

Jason:  It seems to me…It just seems mushy and weird…

Devan:  What?

Jason:  Yeah, you know…

Devan:  You won’t even hold my hand in public?

Jason:  Well, I mean…OK, I’ll hold your hand, yeah.

Devan:  What’s wrong with that?

Jason:  It’s OK, I guess. It’s just a little weird. I’m just not used to it, you know?

Devan:  You really don’t like to kiss in public? I want the whole world to see our love.

Jason:  Um, we can just tell them about it when we meet them…

Devan:  Like right now? Hey world, we’re in love!

Jason:  Oh my God.

Devan:  Like that?

Jason:  Uh…

Discussion

After having a nice time seeing a movie, Devan wants to hold Jason’s hand and kiss him on the sidewalk. Jason pulls away and they start to argue. He doesn’t like public displays of affection, but Devan thinks her boyfriend should want to hold her hand.

Eventually, Devan convinces Jason it will be OK if he holds her hand. He says he’s just not used to PDAs. He says people will know that he and Devan are in love once they get to know them. So Devan decides to get to know everyone in the area by shouting about how much she loves Jason!

Naturally, he’s a little embarrassed. Do you like public displays of affection?

My opinion is-if its true love does not matter where you are , but we should not forget about manners.

If it's just holding hands, I don't see anything wrong with it, but more than that, like kissing or something more gross, well, it's what you really call PDA. Couples must be responsible in showing their affection to one another. There might be children who would think that what they're doing is just right.

I think of public displays of affection like a good way to show your love with someone else, however it´s important to do it with manners not embarresing other people.

I think love is something private so it should be kept inside the lovers because it is something special for them.It should be protected like the pearl inside the shell. When you love someone you wouldn't make him/her be hurt by the sights of people.

Yes, It can be gross when the couple starts to make out nonstop on the street . You can hold hands tighter but kissing on the street will not seem very good on the street , if you need make out ."get a room" go and do that in private.

Oh my gosh, i thought PDA means Personal Digital Assistant and its a gadget – a little brain in your pocket? Thats confusing. To be emotionally in public room it can be heedless. Others don't want to see or hear this. So it can be rude and i like more the PDA from Palm Inc. Laughing

In my opinion holding his/her hand and embrace each other is great. In this way we show others than we love, but I don't like when couple kissing in the street. I agree with Jason it's realy gross.

hey, steven, sure noone should care save for those two in love but then…it's also very much in human nature to be nosy about others:) ppl need stuff to gossip about, and, quite frankly, everyone's quick to think that the so called "mind your business" applies to all but themselves, don't they?;)

cheerio!

wow, here’s why I adore English, there’s an acronym 4 everything:)
so PDA…some say yeah sure, some say no way.no wonder,it seems like a very culture-dependent, individual matter.so let people be as they want to be about that:)
ps.i do it now and then, just like now and then it puts me off:p

I can say that I'm kind of like it,public displays of affection can show others you two are in love and how happy you are.Holding the hands of the one you love is live the happiest thing in the world,at that time, you always want to show your feeling to all, what's more, you would like to make some further movement. To be frankly, kissing before others makes me embarrassed a little, although I haven't kissing before others in the past, but when imaging of that,I would think it's a little weird.Anyway, when you know how to control your manner is best, not only show your love to others, but not make you and others feel uncomfortable.
