Hello!
Grandparents are a great resource. Spending time with them is so valuable. They provide a connection to the past that can’t be found anywhere else. Listening to a grandparent tell a story about his or her life can be one of the most intriguing things you can do.
John recently went to Idaho to celebrate his grandfather’s 90th birthday. Listen to his conversation with Miguel to hear about the experience.

Miguel:  So how was your grandfather’s 90th birthday party?

John:  Oh, it was great. He’s doing so well.

Miguel:  Did he have anything interesting to say about being 90 years old?

John:  It was pretty funny. He said, “You know, last night I went to bed and I was 89, and this morning I woke up and I’m 90. I aged one year in one night.” And he said, “I hope it doesn’t have to me again tonight.”

Miguel:  That does sound like a good story, but I think I was looking for some more, like, perspective on history and life and all that stuff.

John:  We sat him down at the dinner table and started asking him stories, and we pulled out the video camera and, uh, he went for about an hour straight telling stories – every, everything from, um, invading France in World War II to, you know, his, his, uh, school and all his family life and everything. It was pretty interesting.

Miguel:  That does sound cool. That’s one thing I really feel like I missed out on, is I never knew my grandfather.

John:  Well, it’s too bad he lives so far away in Idaho, but, uh, it was really nice to be able to get out and see him. I’m gonna try to see him a lot more.

Discussion

90 is so old! It’s so wonderful that John’s grandfather is in such good health at that age. I’m sure John feels lucky that he still gets to spend quality time with his grandfather. Hopefully, they’ll be celebrating his 100th birthday together in 10 years!
Have a great week!
Beth
