Around, say, 15,000 years ago, hunting was necessary for human survival. But we’ve come a long way since the caveman days. For most of us, bringing meat home involves little more than a trip to the local supermarket.
But plenty of people still hunt, whether it’s for pleasure, tradition, or the thrill of the chase. Even Mason is thinking about giving it a try, but Marni doesn’t think that’s a good idea at all.

Mason: So I think hunting season is opening up soon, and I might go this year.
Marni: What? Are you serious? I didn’t know you were such a sportsman.
Mason: No, I mean I’ve been fishing. You know, I did the whole catch-and-release sort of thing, like trout fishing at the farm and whatnot. But no, I mean, I’ve always kind of wanted to actually go hunting hunting.
Marni: For what purpose? I mean, you want to hunt big game? You want to know the thrill of the hunt and the chase? And because you want to kill an animal?
Mason: I feel that people these days, we’ve been so removed from the food chain because of the supermarket and, like, the mass production of food that if I wanna be a meat-eater, if I wanna eat things that had to get killed at some point, I need to claim that right.
Marni: OK. I have heard that argument and I do understand it. But it just seems, like, at such a great cost. I mean hunting…I just can’t get behind it. I mean innocent animals dying…
Mason: Is it a humane thing, like you just think it’s inhumane?
Marni: I do think it’s inhumane. And I feel like killing something for sport just seems so…I just can’t even comprehend it.

Discussion
Mason tells Marni that he wants to try hunting. Most people are very far removed from the source of their food. They eat meat without really thinking about where it came from. Mason has decided that if he’s going to eat meat, he should kill it himself.
Marni is against hunting for any reason. She feels bad for the animals and can’t imagine killing an animal for sport. To her, hunting seems violent and inhumane.
Have you ever gone hunting? Do you think that hunting is inhumane, or do you agree with Mason?
